When Dan Pierson, recent New York City transplant, first heard Robert Leslie play on the subway, he knew he couldn’t let a good thing pass. Dan immediately invited Robert to play at his upcoming housewarming party. After Dan’s friends and family raved about him, he had an idea…

Not long after that fateful housewarming party, Subway Sets was born. Dan set out to bring the best musician’s from the underground music scene to the rooftops of NYC. Dan created a Kickstarter with the hopes of raising $2,000 to fund the first concert in the Subway Sets series and began to spread the word. Dan wasn’t the only one who was inspired and before he knew it, Subway Sets was selected as a Kickstarter Music Staff Pick and he quickly doubled his Kickstarter goal.

As more details about the first Subway Sets concert fell into place, Dan turned to Eventbrite to sell additional tickets to the August 10th concert, which is where our paths first crossed.

Inspired to take a leap of faith and turn your own big idea into a reality? With one Subway Sets concert in the books, another one planned for November, AND one appearance on Queen Latifah’s talk show under his belt!), Dan offered a few pieces of advice for other new organizers:

1. Stay calm. Things always have a way of working themselves out, even when things might seem a little scary at the time.

2. Find your audience. Seek out your ‘Army of 100’, the people who are passionate about what you’re doing and the ones who will have your back no matter what.

3. Involve your fans. Subway Sets seeks crowdsourced content — people can nominate or suggest their favorite underground musicians for future shows. Help your fans feel invested in the success of your event. That’s where the magic happens.

Want to learn more about Subway Sets? Be sure to follow them on Facebook and Twitter. Additionally, if you’re in the NYC area, be sure to grab a ticket to their next concert on November 30th!
