glide

This sounds like a really cool event.  I wish I had the credentials, the talent or the inclinitation to attend.  Though the description is “The […] conference seeks to provide a venue for design scholars around the world to share pedagogical and technical strategies for global interaction and collaboration”, the gist is you get to spend a day up on the spectaculary-situated campus of the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, in Upstate New York on the banks of the Hudson River, with a bunch of academics strolling around in their Tevas, sipping wine.  Glide08.  There is also a cruise.

Online Marketing for Non-Profits

non-profit 2.0

There’s little doubt that non-profits as a group are better off because of the Web. The advent of the medium has meant, for many of them, the difference between near-total obscurity and nominal “success”. But it seems, these days, that just having a .org website and a PayPal button isn’t enough. The availability of cheap hosting and free CMSes made it easy for orgs to get their sites up and to begin engaging their audiences online. For many of them, it was a bit like being led into a house with plumbing and electricity from a neolithic cave. And though this was a quantum leap, it … Continue Reading

The State of Whales

whales in a changing world

I can’t remember the last time I saw a “Save the Whales” bumper sticker.  Our collective attention may drift to other causes and other issues, but there can be little doubt that the fate of the earth’s largest mammals remains dubious.  Now in its 11th year, the American Cetacean Society’s international conference “Whales in a Changing World” offers answers and a look at how whales, dolphins and porpoises are faring in these uncertain environmental times.  Scheduled for November 13th to the 16th, the conference encompasses multiple activities including a whale watching cruise in Monterey Bay and a symposium featuring some of the world’s foremost marine biologists and whale experts.  … Continue Reading

How to promote your event online, part 1 — Twitter

twitter

Lots of folks will tell you to use Twitter to promote your events online.  But I haven’t yet seen too many offer specific ideas on how to do this.   I want to kick-off a new series of online event promotion how-to articles with some specific answers to the question “How, exactly, can I use Twitter to promote my event?”

It should go without saying that some Twitter tactics won’t be appropriate for all types of events.  There are also differences in what you can do that relate to whether or not you already have a Twitter following.

But one tactic that doesn’t require having an established Twitter following, that I’ve seen used by some … Continue Reading

broadband census

The nation’s foremost broadband policy-makers and experts will analyze and discuss best practices for improving the collection and sharing of public data about high-speed internet access at the Broadband Census for America Conference in Washington, D.C., on Friday, September 26, 2008.  In their own words: “Universal broadband is vital to America’s future economic, social and political health. Collecting better data about broadband through some sort of broadband census is a first step in creating an effective national broadband strategy. Many forces are working toward this end. House Telecommunications and the Internet Subcommittee Chairman Ed Markey introduced, and the House has passed, the ‘Broadband Census of America Act.’ In early 2008, BroadbandCensus.com launched … Continue Reading

October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month and event organizers all over the world are gearing up to host fundraisers to help find a cure!

We’ve seen some great events being planned on Eventbrite like A Cause to Celebrate: The 5th Annual Living in Pink Luncheon happening on October 10th in Washington DC.

Celebrity gals such as Kristin Chenoweth, Molly Sims and Marg Helgenberger are teaming up with the Gal to Gal Foundation on October 2nd in NYC to honor Stage IV fighters and survivors.

The Urban Women Can Win Foundation is meeting up for a happy hour (no doubt serving up some Pink Ladies!) on September 26th in Florida.

battling hotties

These days it seems that every Joe with a Meetup following is trying to pull-off a tech conference of some sort or other.  And if anybody knows how many Joes there are in the world these days, it’s Eventbrite.  Hehe.  But noise and rabid entrepreneurship in the space notwithstanding, it’s clear that there are only a few truly important tech conferences that one should really make an effort to attend.   Why are they important?

1. Because they convene the most influential people to our business and technological lives

2. Because they try to bring interesting new companies to light, and occasionally succeed

By that measure, one of … Continue Reading
