League of Mexican American Women
The League of Mexican American Women (the "League")is a community-based organization that was established in 1973 in Fresno, CA. Its founders were women who were involved in local social organizations and politics. They came to personally understand that there was a need for an organzaiton that would help Latina women step into roles of leadership and harness the great wealth of knowledge and experience that they had to offer. Thus, they formed the League and set out to lift up their community by providing Latina women opportunities to develop and take on leadership roles through various programs while focusing on issues in the community related to education, leadership, and culture. A large part of their mission was to also ensure their Mexican culture stood front and center and would provide a sense of pride and self-esteem for the community and for the next generation of Latinos.
The League is proud to be a multigenerational organization and is composed of Latinas in various stages of life who are business owners, work in public and private sector, college students, stay-at-home moms, and retirees. They all come together as volunteers to make this organization a success. For over 50 years, the League of Mexican American Women has supported opportunities that will promote education, cultural identity, leadership development, and service.
