Dr. Richard D Cortes-Chair of Student Services

Dr. Richard Cortés is a dedicated educator and leader in the field of student services. Currently serving as the Chair of the Student Services Division at Glendale Community College and as Adjunct Assistant Professor for the Rossier School of Education at the University of Southern California. Richard brings over 25 years of experience to his role. Throughout his career, Richard has held various positions, including academic/transfer counselor, director of career and transfer services, and instructor for special population programs such as TRIO and Hispanic Serving Institutions (HSI) programs at five Southern California community colleges. His extensive background has equipped him with a deep understanding of the diverse needs of students from different backgrounds.

Originally from New York City and of Honduran descent, Richard relocated to Los Angeles during his adolescence. He holds a Master of Science in Counseling with a specialization in College Student Personnel Services and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology from California State University, Northridge. He furthered his education by obtaining a PhD in Education with a focus on Higher Education and Human Development from Claremont Graduate University.

Richard's research interests center around minoritized and immigrant student achievement, career counseling self-efficacy, and effective social justice counseling practices. He is passionate about advocating for marginalized student populations and ensuring equitable access to educational opportunities.
