Alpha Phi Alpha - Alpha Epsilon Lambda Chapter

In the year 1911, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. made a significant milestone by establishing its first alumni chapter, Alpha Lambda, in Louisville, Kentucky. This marked an important development as it allowed graduates to maintain or renew their connection to the fraternity. In the subsequent years, there was a notable increase in the formation of alumni chapters, driven by a strong desire among graduates to stay involved with the fraternity. This wave of enthusiasm eventually reached the State of Mississippi in 1927.

On June 10, 1927, Alpha Epsilon Lambda was founded in Jackson, Mississippi, with Brother D. J. Jackson officiating on behalf of the General Organization. Alpha Epsilon Lambda holds the distinction of being the very first chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha, whether alumni or undergraduate, in the State of Mississippi. The charter members included Brothers S. R. Redmond, D. J. Thomas, J.W.E. Bowen, H.C. Latham, E.A. Lanier, E.R. Lawrence, F.W. Martin, and Frederick Hall. The establishment of Alpha Epsilon Lambda, similar to numerous other graduate chapters, was a response to graduate brothers' request for the General Organization to recognize them as local chapters. They sought to foster closer unity among themselves and renew the bonds of brotherhood within Alpha Phi Alpha.

Alpha Epsilon Lambda currently serves as the advisory arm for three undergraduate chapters in the metro Jackson area: Gamma Upsilon at Tougaloo College, Delta Phi at Jackson State University, and Omicron Gamma at Millsaps/Belhaven Colleges. The chapter plays a crucial role in providing leadership and guidance to these collegiate brothers, with the aim of facilitating their growth and active participation in all aspects of the Fraternity.

Furthermore, Alpha Epsilon Lambda is deeply committed to engaging in various community activities. They actively participate in initiatives such as the National Pan-Hellenic Council, MLK Memorial Projects, adoption of Henry J. Kirksey Middle School, and Alpha Esquires. Additionally, they organize numerous events to elevate the standard of excellence in Jackson, Mississippi, and contribute to the betterment of the community.
