My Definition of Yoga
Yoga is many things
Yoga is a way of life. Universal principles or truths that have been passed down through various paths and lifetimes of study, are retold in stories and writings that resonate in our hearts.
In the West people come to know yoga through the limb of Asana (the physical practice) This is the starting point. We embrace the physical practice we find our mind becomes stilled and we look further inward. We seek to find the truth of our true nature in the self that is beneath the veil of separateness. There are many paths to achieve this pleasurable state of union with the divine. The yogis call it Samadhi - the eighth limb of Ashtanga yoga.
In speaking of the divine. Yoga is not a religion Yoga does not insist there is a god nor does it deny the existence of a god but encourages students to embrace a spiritual connection that resonates with their own background. Yoga teaches us to not get attached to the fruits of our efforts but rather to have the equanimous mind..This means that rather than seeing experiences as good or bad we are interested in what each experience will teach us. Through self study we come to know ourselves. This knowing of the self will free us from suffering caused by attachment and clinging. Yoga teaches us to surrender. We put in effort and disciplined action but we are not constantly striving.
We come to know that we will always have ups and downs in life. We will experience uncomfortable emotions and times of turmoil because that is the human experience. In every stage of life, in every experience there is a lesson to be learned. Yoga is the connection of mind, body and spirit with the divine so that we see ourselves in all living things and in the divine.
