Event description

Description

Every child deserves a healthy start, a loving home, a good school, a safe neighborhood - these are foundational for a long, healty and happy life. Yet, we are faced with the largest public health crisis, and it is also the least known. Join Western Youth Services (WYS), to learn about the ground-breaking Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) study that is changing the way childhood stress and trauma is addressed. Our intent is to lead a global movement to shift the paradigm of ACEs, and teach methods to prevent their negative, long-term effects. We hope to shine a light and bring awareness to this serious issue, and inspire you to join the movement.

What will I learn from attending this workshop?

  1. Common examples of ACEs and how they affect our lives, and the lives around us

  2. Opportunity to take the ACEs survey and gain a closer understanding of its impact

  3. How others have successfully overcome these challenges and what you can do to have similar success in your personal and professional lives

  4. Next steps and strategies to participate in helping grow this movement and put an end to preventable, childhood traumas

About the Film

As part of the workshop, we will be featuring the highly acclaimed documentary Resilience: the Biology of Stress & The Science of Hope. As revealed in the film, there is a dangerous biological syndrome caused by abuse and neglect during childhood. Toxic stress impacts the brain development of children and can be predictive of a lifetime of physical and mental illness. What's more, the physiological changes brought on by toxic stress also put children at greater risk for homelessness, prison time and early death. But this does not have to be the case. Resilience chronicles the work of trailblazers like Western Youth Services who are addressing toxic stress and other ACEs, by providing insight, hope, and strategies on how each one of us can make a difference.
