Allegheny Mountain Wetlands

Allegheny Mountain Institute (AMI) is a 501(c)3 educational nonprofit organization that cultivates healthy communities through food and education. We strive to reach our mission through a three-pronged approach. We support organizations, schools, and the local community by integrating farming, nutritious food, and related education into food systems and outreach initiatives. We network regionally to build a food system that nourishes our bodies, our environment, and our economy.

A hands-on, experiential learning, field workshop hosted by Virginia Vernal Pools expert Mike Hayslett.

Allegheny Farm

Mike and his team will construct a vernal pool habitat on the AMI campus as part of the workshop covering high elevation, Allegheny Mountain wetland environments and their dynamics.The workshop will also include salamander search, plant identification, and other exploratory activities of this Western Highlands montane environment at 4,100’ elevation in red spruce forests at the head of the Laurel Fork.Stay if you choose for an informal, evening campfire social of Storytelling + Show &amp; Tell with the master naturalist, Mike Hayslett - a native Virginia Alleghanyan.Participants are encouraged to dress in long pants and hiking boots; bring drinks and snacks.Please bring work gloves, two 5-gallon buckets, plus a leaf rake to be involved in special projects as part of the workshop. Workshop times from 10:00 am – 4:00 pm. Please arrive by 9:45. Lunch is provided. We will be doing a fair amount of walking.
