This training is geared toward any provider wanting to increase their understanding of the intersection between maternal mental health and birth trauma. This course will provide a brief overview of common mental health concerns that present throughout the perinatal period –during pregnancy and postpartum. Special focus will be paid to prevalence, risk factors, and methods of detection for traumatic childbirth.

This training will also provide first-hand accounts of parents who experienced traumatic childbirth for participants to have the opportunity to engage in applied experiential learning to inform their clinical work. Participants will also be provided resources to support their clinical work with perinatal clients.

2 CEs available to NYS LMHCs, LMFTs, LCSWs, LMSWs, LCATs, NYS Licensed Psychologists and NYS Licensed Psychoanalysts provided by Hudson Valley Professional Development, LLC upon successful completion of training.

Objectives:

Upon completion of the training, participants will:

-be able identify common mental health disorders that present during pregnancy and postpartum.

-be able to identify risk factors for experiencing traumatic childbirth.

- experience a firsthand account of trauma in childbirth to better understand its presentation through experiential and applied learning.

-be able to describe screening, referral, and resource options for perinatal clients who have experienced a traumatic birth.

In accordance with the NY State Department of Education guidelines, in order to receive continuing education contact hours, a participant needs to be present for the duration of the workshop/training. Therefore, participants who arrive late or leave the event early will not be granted a certificate of completion.

Dr. Rachel Diamond, PhD, LMFT, PMH-C is a licensed marriage and family therapist (LMFT) and certified in perinatal mental health (PMH-C) through Postpartum Support International. She maintains a private practice in Chicago, Rachel Diamond, PLLC, where she primarily works with individuals and couples presenting with issues related to pregnancy and adjusting to new parenthood. She is trained in EMDR specifically for the perinatal population and utilizes this in her treatment of reproductive traumas.

Additionally, as a former university professor, Dr. Diamond is also a well published researcher. The focus of her research and scholarship is on relational and perinatal mental health with special attention to empirically-based practical applications for clinicians. You can find her writings in journals such as Women and Birth, Family Process, and Contemporary Family Therapy, as well as popular media such as The Conversation and her Psychology Today blog “Preparing for Parenthood”.
