About this event

  • 3 hours

Join us for a magical night under the celestial canvas at Mary Gray Bird Sanctuary! On two nights, Sunday, August 11 and Monday, August 12, visit the Sanctuary and immerse yourself in the awe-inspiring spectacle of the Perseid Meteor Shower.

The Perseids Meteors are caused by Earth passing through debris — bits of ice and rock — left behind by Comet Swift-Tuttle. The Perseids peak when Earth passes through the densest and dustiest area on Aug. 11-13. Years without moonlight see higher rates of meteors per hour, and in outburst years (such as in 2016) the rate can be between 150-200 meteors an hour.

Evening Highlights:

Stargazing: Witness the peak of the Perseid Meteor Shower at one of the best stargazing spots in the region. Experience nature's dazzling light show as meteor streaks paint the night sky. Volunteers will be on hand to point out constellations, share sky stories, and help you with pointers on spotting the "shooting stars".

S'mores Station: Indulge your taste buds with a DIY s'mores station! Roast marshmallows over a crackling bonfire and create your perfect gooey treat while sharing stories with fellow stargazers.

Telescope Observations: Peer through our universe and check out celestrial wonders from the darkness the forests and fields of Mary Gray Bird Sanctuary offers.

Each evening begins at 8:30pm, with general set up, and chance to lay your blankets down for a good view of the night sky. Best stargazing will take place later into the evening. Participants may enjoy IAS membership perks of free camping in the nearby rustic campground. Children 16 and under must be accompanied by a parent or adult. Registration is $5 for Indiana Audubon members. Non-member adult registration is $10/person. No registration required for youth 17 years of age and under. Participants should bring a blanket or chair to sit in, bug spray, and snacks and drinks.
