About this event

This workshop explores the theory, history, skills, tools, and methods of sand tray play therapy for children and adults.  Participants will explore supplies, basic concepts and themes of Sandtray Therapy. Hands-on experiences allow participants to explore, build and witnss the various elements of the sand tray process through a neuro-biological lens. We will review Sandtray therapy as it pertains to children/teen, adults, families and groups. You will leave with skills to immediately bring Sandtray into your therapy practice!

Objectives:

  1. Participants discuss the history and various theoretical perspectives on sand tray play therapy
  2. Participants will describe the mental health benefits and research of using sandtray in play therapy.
  3. Participants will familiarize themselves with necessary sandtray supplies (i.e. sand types, tray types, miniature categories and collections).
  4. Participants will describe the steps in sandtray protocol and processing.
  5. Participants will identify benefits of directive and non-directive play therapy approaches when using sandtray. 
  6. Participants will identify and assess common themes found in sandtrays.
  7. Participants will describe sandtray strategies and expectations when working with various age groups including young children, adolescents and adults.
  8. Participants will describe sandtray strategies when working with families and groups in play therapy.
  9. Participants will demonstrate at least 5 sandtray directives to be used in the play therapy room.
  10. Participants will demonstrate, through experiential play and exploration, how sandtray therapy can be used as a powerful tool for processing trauma, exploration of inner-self and personal growth
  11. Participants will review the latest research on neurobiology and how the roles of mirror neurons, co-regulation and experiential expression enrich the play therapy process.
  12. Participants describe  ways to document treatment goals, progress notes, communication with caregivers in sandtray therapy.

About the trainers:

Bea Burchill, LSCSW, RPT

Bea Burchill, LSCSW, Registered Play Therapist™ received her BSW from Wichita State University and then went on to receive her MSW from the University of Kansas. Bea has many years of experience as a child therapist working with children aged 2-20 who have experienced childhood trauma. She has worked in domestic violence agencies as well as community mental health. Currently she is an elementary school social worker. Bea is a big nerd and loves all things Harry Potter, Superheroes and pop culture. She is passionate about play and fostering moments of joy and connection. She loves spending time outside and reading picture books with her toddler, husband and family.

Ragan Snyder-Smith, LSCSW RPT-S, M.Ed.

Ragan is a Licensed Specialist Clinical Social Worker and Registered Play Therapist-Supervisor™ . She has a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology and a Master’s degree in Social Work from Wichita State University. She also has a Master’s in Education from Newman University. She is certified Trauma-Focused CBT and EMDR (through EMDRIA). She also provides training for mental health clinicians and supervision for those seeking licensure as a LSCSW in the state of Kansas and nationally as a Registered Play Therapist.

Ragan has been a social worker for 20 years and worked in foster care, adoptions, drug and alcohol counseling, school social work, medical and psychiatric social work, and is currently in private practice.

Cancellation & Refund Policy: Cancellations received at least 7 days prior to a scheduled training are refundable at 100%. After that, no refunds will be issued. You may reschedule for a future training if there is one available. Eventbrite fees are not refundable. You may send another attendee in your place.

No shows or missed trainings will receive no refund or credit.

No partial CE credit is available. Attendees must be present the entire duration of the training.

Play therapy continuing education credit will not be awarded to non-mental health professionals.

All trainings are subject to sufficient registration.

Should Ad Astra Play Therapy & Counseling, LLC need to cancel a training due to instructor illness or family emergency or unforeseen circumstance, we will make every attempt to notify paid registrants in a timely manner. All paid registrants will receive a full refund.

Ad Astra Play Therapy & Counseling, LLC only assumes liability for the registration portion of any training. All other costs are the responsibility of the registrant.
