ABOUT THE MHIF INTERNSHIP PROGRAM
Minneapolis Heart Institute Foundation offers one of the most outstanding and unique internship opportunities available to undergraduate premed students and those studying in other health care disciplines. Since its inception in 2002, 172 students have participated in the program, typically 13 students per year. Selection criteria include academic achievement, extracurricular involvement, a dedication to medicine, the applicant’s communication skills and professionalism, and an overall interest in research.
Each intern is assigned one or more clinical research projects under the mentorship of a physician and the corresponding clinical research professional. Interns are engaged in clinical research with tasks such as data collection, database building and organizing, patient follow up calls, imaging studies and manuscript and abstract writing. Many interns are given the autonomy to draft abstracts or manuscripts under the supervision of a physician mentor or research coordinator. This allows the interns to understand the academic side of medicine and highlights importance of professional writing and editing skills. Physicians around the world make decisions about patient care based on MHIF research outcomes. In a typical year, interns contribute to 10+ research presentations at national scientific meetings and 10+ publications in peer-reviewed journals.
