Designing, Implementing, and Refining Evaluation Rubrics Workshop

Grounded in current research and practical application, the Equity in Graduate Education Consortium's (EGE) Designing, Implementing, and Refining Evaluation Rubrics Workshop provides participants with the knowledge, tools, and strategies to design, evaluate, and refine rubrics that strengthen selection and evaluation processes. Through guided reflection, interactive discussion, and practical activities, participants will explore evidence-based practices for developing rubrics that promote consistent, transparent, and effective decision-making across admissions, hiring, fellowships, awards, and other evaluation contexts.

Rubrics are a valuable tool for bringing structure and clarity to evaluation processes, but their effectiveness depends on thoughtful design and implementation. During this workshop, participants will examine best practices for developing high-quality rubrics, assess existing rubrics for strengths and areas of improvement, and learn strategies for avoiding symbolic adoption. Participants will also explore how to align rubrics with organizational values, the current legal landscape, and other components of the broader selection system to create more meaningful and effective evaluation processes.

Designed for faculty, administrators, admissions committee members, search committee members, and staff across all academic disciplines, this interactive workshop provides practical resources and actionable strategies that participants can immediately apply to develop or strengthen evaluation rubrics within their own institutional contexts.
