Great for beginners and fiber-fanatics alike!

In this workshop, I'll be sharing a private handwork practice that I use as a mediation to sooth ruminating thoughts, doubts and feelings of inadequacy and depression; sewing coiled baskets out of upcycled fabrics and twines, string and rafia. In much of my practice as an artist, I am exploring craft and handwork as a form of innerwork, and conceptual exploration, rather than just a means to make a product.

I also teach this class in an online version.

The Process is what we'll be focusing on -- the spiraling around and around of the basket will be like a walking meditation through a labyrinth of our inner world, and tell the story of our lives through color, expressive stitching and experimentation.

Across cultures on every continent, the coiled basket has been both a humble tool for everyday survival and a rich culture-keeper of story and dreamwork, from Australian Aboriginal People, to Masai, to neolithic Celtic peoples, to Hopi and Navajo, to North Atlantic islanders, to Coast Salish makers born of the land we all now inhabit.

I began this meditative process by studying baskets called ciosans, made in the Scottish Highlands out of marran grass.

We’ll be using recycled fabrics diverted from the waste stream, considering our impact on the planet through our fast consumer choices, we'll be slowing way down to hand make a labor intensive basket.

Participants will be given a tapestry needle and can take home some string and recycled fibers to continue working with after class, and can continue this soothing practice infinitely using their own discarded clothes and whatever they find around them.

PLEASE READ FAQ BELOW BEFORE BOOKING.

The Garden Workshops are held in a small urban forest with towering heritage Douglas Fir trees, that create a cool and pleasant shade garden, even in the height of summer. These take place from June-Sept.

Workshops are held rain or shine, because there is a covered workshop and a festival tent.

Now, from Oct - May, workshops will again be held inside my light-filled custom built studio, with woodstove.
