About this event

This is a 2-session class!

In this class, you will learn how to use nearly every tool in any average woodshop safely and confidently, and you will leave with a functional piece made with your own hands! This class is well suited for people new to woodworking or those looking to brush up on their skills.

Spring 2024 sessions:

Sundays

May 19th and May 26th, 1:30-4:30pm

June 23rd and June 30th, 1:30- 4:30pm

In the first session of this class, you will receive a basic introduction to the concepts of woodworking, including understanding wood as a material. We will go over each machine used over the course of this project and the best safety practices for each, then we will dress our raw lumber into something more usable. Once we have our lumber flattened, squared, and thicknessed, we will cut it into smaller pieces to be glued back together to make a wider and more stable piece of wood than we started with. In the second session we will remove the clamps from our cutting boards and begin the process of cleaning them up and re-flattening them. Once we have flat and square cutting boards, we will use the router table to cut various features on our boards before diving into sanding and finishing.

Over the course of this class you will become familiar with and gain hands-on experience with: jointer, planer, tablesaw, chopsaw, router table and palm sanders.

Topics we will cover: Shop safety, wood types and milling methods, wood movement, dressing rough lumber, measuring and cutting to dimension, gluing and layout, sanding and finishing.

Instructor:

A woodturner by trade, Farcee is a genderqueer craftsperson and artist with a wide range of experience in working with a variety of mediums, everything from rejected lumber scraps to resin-infused carrots. The act of revealing things from otherwise-rejected and unexpected things is at the heart of her work. Farcee teaches classes at Makerspace NYC and Bien Hecho Academy in Brooklyn.
