This course is geared toward mental health or medical providers seeking to gain greater competencies related to practicing appropriate professional boundaries in clinical practice. This course will briefly address APA Code of Ethics as well as explore various considerations related to confidentiality with clients.

The training will provide helpful tips for managing and addressing moments in which transference and countertransference emerge. This course will discuss the different types of self-disclosure that exist and provide a framework for practicing self-disclosure in sessions through an intersectional feminist and ethical decision making lens. In this course we will explore considerations for telehealth services, walk-and-talk therapy, mandated reporting and strategies to manage communication outside of sessions with your clients.

This training provides reflective questions and case examples that aim to assist participants with identifying areas that may create barriers and challenges when practicing appropriate professional boundaries.

3 CEs available to NYS LMHCs, LMFTs, LCSWs, LMSWs, LCATs, NYS Licensed Psychologists and NYS Licensed Psychoanalysts provided by Hudson Valley Professional Development, LLC upon successful completion of training.

This training fulfills the Appropriate Professional Boundaries requirement for NYS LMHCs, LMFTs, LCSWs, LMSWs, LCATs, psychoanalysts and NYS Licensed Psychologists.

Learning Objectives:

1. Participants will understand what appropriate professional boundaries are, how to

maintain them, and learn how to work through ethical dilemmas.

2. Participants will learn strategies to manage and address moments in which transference

and countertransference emerge in clinical practice.

3. Participants will learn about codes of ethics and how to protect the confidentiality of

clients.

4. Participants will be provided with tools and resources necessary to practice

self-disclosure in sessions through an intersectional feminist and ethical decision-making

lens.

5. Participants will be able to apply supportive strategies and other best practices in their

clinical work providing telehealth services, walk-and-talk therapy, mandated reporting

and communicating outside of sessions with your clients.

In accordance with the NY State Department of Education guidelines, in order to receive continuing education contact hours, a participant needs to be present for the duration of the workshop/training. Therefore, participants who arrive late or leave the event early will not be granted a certificate of completion.

Nyx Melody (Nicholas Moran), LMHC (they/them/theirs & fae/faer/faers) is a queer, panromantic, non-binary, trans femme New York State licensed mental health counselor, clinical supervisor, educator, and consultant on anti-oppression, mental health, gender/sexuality, and LGBTQIA+ issues.

Nyx graduated from Point Park University with a bachelor's degree in Psychology where they completed a research study regarding the ongoing coming out process for queer men. Nyx completed a dual master's degree: Master of the Arts in Psychological Counseling and a Master of Education in Mental Health Counseling from Teachers College, Columbia University, where faer took extensive course work and engaged in research initiatives surrounding queer and gender expansive microaggressions/mental health concerns.

Nyx completed a clinical internship at Mount Sinai West - The Addictions Institute of New York working primarily with the Crystal Clear Project that assisted queer and TGNC clients with crystal methamphetamine dependence. Nyx started their career working with clients who have mental health, medical, and substance use concerns at a substance use treatment program in the South Bronx through Montefiore Medical Center. They worked at a queer affirmative group private practice and now run a successful private practice for therapy, coaching, and consultation services.

Fae also works as an Adjunct Assistant Professor of Psychology & Education at Teachers College, Columbia University teaching mental health counseling graduate students. Nyx is an Adjunct Instructor in the Department of Applied Psychology at NYU Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development teaching group dynamics, cross-cultural psychology, and lab for individual counseling skills to graduate students in mental health counseling.

Nyx has had the privilege of working in and amongst diverse populations, which has reframed their approach to therapy in order to ensure that it is more adaptable, accessible, and demystified. Therefore, Nyx draws upon queer, intersectional feminist, humanistic, multicultural, trauma-informed, decolonized, sex/body positive, and anti-oppressive theories to foster an egalitarian and collaborative relationship.
