Founded in 1920, the Preservation Society of Charleston (PSC) is the oldest grassroots preservation organization in the country.  The PSC serves as a strong advocacy leader for preserving Charleston’s distinctive character, quality of life, and diverse neighborhoods. We advocate alongside residents, elected officials, city staff, and project teams for preservation and planning that betters our city.The Preservation Society a 501(c)(3) non-profit. To celebrate National Preservation Month, the Preservation Society of Charleston has created a diverse lineup of events to showcase the best of preservation and design throughout the Lowcountry. We hope you will join us!

The Starlight Motor Inn (c. 1961) is a historic, mid-century motel located on the west side of Rivers Avenue in North Charleston. Originally known as, “The Host of America Motel”, and later “The Star of America Motel” it was the South’s first modular-built motel. In 2020, it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places and reopened in 2023 after an extensive restoration that brought this gem back to life. It&#x27;s recent restoration brings guests back in time, evoking great nostalgia while also being comfortable and convenient for the modern traveler. Join the PSC and local preservation and research consultant, Brittany Lavelle Tulla, to tour and learn more about this mid-century motel’s significant history, construction, and restoration. The tour will end in the motel&#x27;s Burgundy Lounge where light snacks will be provided and a cash bar is available.
