Brooklyn has over 100 years of Filipino / Filipino-American history. Much of this history is largely unknown and underrepresented. 'Brooklyn Karihan: A Bklyn Filipino Living Social Gathering' is thus a program crafted as a gesture to creatively spotlight and excavate local Filipino history whilst building community. Note: The title "Brooklyn Karihan" is a nod to the largely unknown legacy of the Manila Restaurant (aka Manila Karihan), a Bklyn Filipino 'third space' that once stood on 47 Sands Street, in Brooklyn during the 1930s. In this event we honor memory and the gathering spaces that gave shelter and joy to Brooklyn Filipinos past and present.

'Brooklyn Karihan' is a featured program in the 'Baryo Brooklyn: A Public Program Series of Filipino History in Brooklyn'.

'Baryo Brooklyn' is made possible by public funds from the Greater New York Arts Development Fund of the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs, the Statewide Community Regrants Program, as well as from a regrant program of the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the New York State Legislature, both administered by Brooklyn Arts Council.

This project is supported by The Laundromat Project through the Create & (Re)Connect Fund.

Moreover, we are Thankful to the community partnerships of the Filipino American National Historical Society - Metro New York Chapter, Unassimilated Walking Tours, The People's Creative Institute, and Atlantic Pacific Theatre.
