Celebrating Black History Month- Verb Ballets

Ohio Contemporary Ballet formerly Verb Ballets engages people through bold performances rooted in contemporary ballet and strives to be a vital community asset by providing access to dance opportunities and education in the Great Lakes region and beyond.

Ohio Contemporary Ballet

In celebration of Black History Month, Verb Ballets will present original works by nationally recognized African American choreographers on February 3, 2018 at The Breen Center. The performance will feature two works by award winning Philadelphia choreographer and former dancer with PHILADANCO!, Tommie-Waheed Evans and two works by Cleveland native Antonio Brown, a former dancer with Bill T Jones/Arnie Zane Dance Company. 
Tommie-Waheed Evans' audience favorite, Dark Matter, returns to the stage. Described by critics as, "sleek encounters that brim with contrasting patterns and connections", this intensely driven physical work is complemented by stage designer Trad A Burns' rhythmically controlled and breathtaking visual effects. His new work Surge.Capacity.Force. which he created on Verb Ballets this past summer will showcase his talents as a choreographer imparted with a drive to address current issues of social justice. 
<DIV>Returning to the Cleveland stage after a hiatus of several years will be two works by Cleveland native Antonio Brown. A graduate of the Cleveland School of the Arts, he enjoyed a long career with Bill T Jones/Arnie Zane Dance Company before starting his own company, Antonio Brown Dance. Verb is reviving his first work, Continuum, a contemporary piece that intertwines patterns and bodies for a visually kinetic experience. Critics hailed the Verb Ballets performance of his work as, "nothing can restrain the thrust that the Verb cast lavishes on Brown's exuberant brainstorm". Brown's most recent work on the company, Passing By, is a lusciously abstract work with captivating lighting by Trad A Burns. The use of shafts of light over white rectangles adds to this intriguing work that was featured at the International Association of Blacks in Dance conference in 2015!</DIV>
