A Conversation with Rep. Marsha Blackburn on Rural Broadband and Infrastructure Development

A central theme of the 2016 election cycle was infrastructure development and economic revitalization. An important part of that is broadband access. Broadband speeds in rural America tend to be much slower than in urban areas, limiting industries ranging from health care and education to manufacturing and transportation. Obtaining high quality broadband is seen in many rural areas as a key foundation for economic development throughout the country.
As Chairman of the House Energy and Commerce Committee's Communications and Technology Subcommittee and a small businesswoman serving a rural district in Tennessee, U.S. Representative Marsha Blackburn is a strong advocate of rural broadband development. On Tuesday, May 23, Hudson Institute's Center for the Economics of the Internet will host Rep. Blackburn for a conversation on unlocking the economic potential of rural America. Harold Furchtgott-Roth, director of Hudson's Center for the Economics of the Internet and former FCC Commissioner, will moderate the discussion.
 
Representative Marsha Blackburn U.S. Representative from Tennessee's 7th District Rep. Marsha Blackburn has served Tennessee's 7th Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives since 2003. She is Chairman of the Energy and Commerce Committee's Subcommittee on Communications and Technology. As a small businesswoman, author, mother, and member of Congress, Rep. Blackburn has dedicated her service to making America a more prosperous place to live. Rep. Blackburn began her elected service career in 1998 as a Tennessee state senator and made became well-known for her commitment to fiscal common sense and government accountability. In Congress, Rep. Blackburn has earned a reputation as a bipartisan leader and policy expert on telecommunications issues and intellectual property rights. She and her husband Chuck live in Williamson County, Tennessee.
