In Venezuela, everything is crashing except the government. Shortages in food, medicine, clean drinking water, money, and even the paper needed to produce passports continue to cause mass suffering in the oil-rich country. Despite the wealth of resources in Venezuela, mismanagement and global economic trends have led to the collapse or malfunctioning of almost every sector of the formal economy. And yet, the Maduro administration has survived for four years. How much longer can it last in this crisis-torn country?
 On Wednesday, March 29, Hudson Institute’s Center for Latin America Studies will host a discussion on the political factors that explain the resilience of the Maduro administration. Javier Corrales, a professor at Amherst College and author of Dragon in the Tropic: The Legacy of Hugo Chávez, will analyze the situation in Venezuela, drawing comparisons with crises elsewhere in Latin America and identifying the key components of the Venezuelan government's survival strategy. Gustavo Coronel, a distinguished Venezuelan geologist and political scientist, and Hector Schamis, a professor at Georgetown University, will offer commentary on Professor Corrales’s remarks. The discussion will be moderated by Hudson Senior Fellow Ambassador Jaime Daremblum.

Ambassador Jaime Daremblum, a scholar of Latin America, international politics, and international economics, joined Hudson Institute as Senior Fellow and Director of Hudson's Center for Latin American Studies in 2005. He served as Ambassador of Costa Rica to the United States from 1998 to 2004.
 
Dr. Javier Corrales is the Dwight W. Morrow 1895 Professor of Political Science at Amherst College in Amherst, Massachusetts. His research is focused on democratization and the political economy of development. His work on Latin America has focused on presidential powers, political parties, economic reforms, international relations, and sexuality. His latest work is as the co-author with Michael Penfold of Dragon in the Tropic: The Legacy of Hugo Chávez, now in its second edition. 
 
Gustavo Coronel is a Venezuelan petroleum geologist and an independent consultant on the geopolitics of energy and public policy. He is a founding member of the Board of Petróleos de Venezuela and was a member of the Venezuelan Congress dissolved by Hugo Chávez. He has published four books and is the author of the recent study, Corruption, Mismanagement and Abuse of Power in Hugo Chávez's Venezuela. As president of Agrupacion Pro Calidad de Vida, Coronel was the Venezuelan representative to Transparency International from 1996 to 2000.
 
Dr. Hector E. Schamis is a professor at Georgetown University’s Center for Latin American Studies and a columnist for El Pais (Madrid). Schamis was a fellow at the Woodrow Wilson Center, Cambridge University, and the Central European University in Budapest. He is the author of Re-Forming the State: The Politics of Privatization in Latin America and Europe and a variety of journal articles and book chapters on authoritarianism, populism, democratization, and the political economy of exchange rate policy in Latin America.
