In the wake of the FCC’s controversial victory in U.S. Telecom Association v. FCC, and as the presidential election approaches, the future of the American communications industry is uncertain. To what extent will the FCC’s proposal to eliminate the cable television industry’s set-top boxes threaten innovation in the television marketplace? Are zero-rated data practices forbidden by the Open Internet Order, and how much longer will these offerings remain in legal limbo? Will the FCC redeem its struggling spectrum incentive auction? How will the Commission justify unequal treatment of broadband companies and edge providers in its current privacy rulemaking? 
On October 13, distinguished FCC Commissioner Michael O’Rielly will address these questions and discuss the future of federal regulation of the communications industry. Harold Furchtgott-Roth, Director of the Hudson Institute’s Center for the Economics of the Internet and a former FCC Commissioner, will moderate the event.
 Commissioner Michael O’Rielly was nominated for a seat on the Federal Communications Commission by President Barack Obama on August 1, 2013 and was confirmed unanimously by the United States Senate. Prior to joining the FCC, Commissioner O’Rielly served as Policy Advisor in the Office of the Senate Republican Whip, led by U.S. Senator John Cornyn. Previously, he worked the offices of U.S. Senator Jon Kyl and U.S. Senator John Sununu, as well as for the the Republican Policy Committee in the U.S. Senate as a Policy Analyst for Banking, Technology, Transportation, Trade, and Commerce issues. Before his tenure as a Senate staffer, he served as a Professional Staff Member on the Committee on Energy and Commerce in the United States House of Representatives.
Harold Furchtgott-Roth is a senior fellow and the director of the Center for the Economics of the Internet at Hudson Institute. From 1997 through 2001, Furchtgott-Roth served as a commissioner of the Federal Communications Commission. Before his appointment to the FCC, he was chief economist for the House Committee on Commerce and a principal staff member on the Telecommunications Act of 1996.
