The book is a narration of critical phases in the histories of India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh and the impact each had on Sobhan. Sobhan served the first Government of Bangladesh as Envoy Extraordinaire with special responsibility for Economic Affairs, was a member of the first Bangladesh Planning Commission, and later headed Bangladesh’s development research facility, Bangladesh Institute of Development Studies (<SPAN CLASS="caps" STYLE="margin: 0px; padding: 0px; border: 0px; font-style: inherit; font-variant: inherit; font-weight: inherit; font-stretch: inherit; line-height: inherit; font-family: inherit; vertical-align: baseline;">BIDS).

A country created as a secular nation, with a population of over 150 million and an economy that is growing at 7 percent annually, Bangladesh appears to be in a struggle for its very soul. On June 23, Hudson Institute will host a discussion on Bangladesh’s past, present, and future with Dr. Rehman Sobhan. This book talk will be moderated by Ambassador Husain Haqqani, Director for South and Central Asia, Hudson Institute.

In 1993, he founded and became the Chairman of the Centre for Policy Dialogue (CPD), one of Bangladesh’s most prestigious think tanks. He also headed the South Asia Centre for Policy Studies (SACEPS) from 2000 to 2005, one of the leading think tanks for promoting regional cooperation in South Asia. Dr. Sobhan served the first Government of Bangladesh as Envoy Extraordinaire with special responsibility for Economic Affairs, was a member of the first Bangladesh Planning Commission, and later headed Bangladesh’s development research facility, Bangladesh Institute of Development Studies (BIDS).

Ambassador Haqqani served as Pakistan’s ambassador to the United States from 2008-2011 and is widely credited with managing a difficult partnership during a critical phase in the global war on terrorism. His distinguished career in government includes serving as an advisor to four Pakistani Prime ministers, Yusuf Raza Gilani, Benazir Bhutto, Nawaz Sharif, and Ghulam Mustafa Jatoi. He has authored multiple books, including the acclaimed Pakistan: Between Mosque and Military, which was reviewed as a path-breaking book on Pakistan’s political history. Ambassador Haqqani contributes numerous op-eds and articles to international publications and is the coeditor of Hudson’s signature journal Current Trends in Islamic Ideology.
