The country’s military and religious extremists wield disproportionate influence. Religious minorities, both Muslim and non-Muslim, face systematic discrimination. Journalists and independent television channels exercise self-censorship, while enforced disappearances continue to be carried out with impunity by security forces, particularly in Balochistan. Meanwhile, the elected government of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif faces serious challenges, including charges of corruption.
<P STYLE="margin: 0px 0px 30px; padding: 0px; border: 0px; font-stretch: inherit; line-height: 31px; font-family: Copernicus, Georgia, serif; font-size: 16px; vertical-align: baseline; color: #191919; text-align: justify;">On May 18, Hudson Institute Senior Fellow Husain Haqqani, Pakistan’s former ambassador to the United States, will join Asma Jahangir, Pakistan’s leading human rights lawyer and activist, for an in-depth look at the current situation in Pakistan and prospects for change.
 
Asma Jahangir is a prominent human rights lawyer and activist in Pakistan. She founded the nation's first legal aid center in 1986, and was a leading figure of the Women’s Action Forum, a pressure group that campaigned against Pakistan’s discriminatory legislation. Jahangir was one of the founding members of the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan. The commission has taken up contentious issues such as violence against women, honor-killing, abolishment of capital punishment, and religious violence. She was the first woman to serve as president of the Supreme Court Bar Association of Pakistan. Jahangir served as the UN Special Rapporteur on Extrajudicial, Arbitrary or Summary Executions from 1998 to 2004, and UN Special Rapporteur on Freedom of Religion and Belief from 2004 to 2010. 
 Ambassador Husain Haqqani is a Hudson Institute Senior Fellow and Director for South and Central Asia. Ambassador Haqqani served as Pakistan’s ambassador to the United States from 2008-2011 and is widely credited with managing a difficult partnership during a critical phase in the global war on terrorism. His distinguished career in government includes serving as an advisor to four Pakistani Prime ministers, Yusuf Raza Gilani, Benazir Bhutto, Nawaz Sharif, and Ghulam Mustafa Jatoi. He has authored multiple books, including the acclaimed Between Mosque and Military in 2005, which was reviewed as a path-breaking book on Pakistan’s political history. Ambassador Haqqani contributes numerous op-eds and articles to international publications and is the co-editor of Hudson’s signature journal Current Trends in Islamic Ideology.
