This panel will explore the connection between zines &amp; performance and ways zines themselves can be considered ‘performance’. With contributions from <a href="https://www.instagram.com/klaraszafranska/" title="https://www.instagram.com/klaraszafranska/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Klara Szafranska</a> &amp; <a href="https://www.hamishmacpherson.co.uk/about" title="https://www.hamishmacpherson.co.uk/about" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Hamish MacPherson</a>, they will join Edinburgh Zine Library member Natifah White to share their experience of zine &amp; performance-making as well as discuss the connection (and potential) between the two practices.This event will include a pre-recorded panel discussion, followed by a live Q&amp;A with panel members. Any questions, email zines@edinburghzinelibrary.comPanelKlara Szafrańska is a Polish artist based in Nottingham. She works with ceramic sculpture, video, and performance. Her practice draws from the socio-political theme of fetish, linking the political and social to the visceral, metaphysical and inner. Her imagery often references everyday objects and perishable and consumable materials like food, packaging and wider popular culture that hold personal significance. She looks at how the durability and non-disposability of familiar, pretend-to-be-functional ceramic objects lure her in with the promise of forever nourishment. Through questions about the flesh of materiality, the chase of the phantom of fulfilment and their socio-political tissue, she self-examines her own experiences and engages in the wider discourse on commodity fetishism and the magical qualities we assign to man-made objects as they become entangled in capitalist systems.Szafrańska’s socially engaged practice looks at transnational identities seeking transgressive methods of interactions with art and each other, as well as zine-making.Hamish MacPherson, an artist-researcher interested in the cross-overs between choreography and philosophy. Since 2017, Hamish has edited five issues of STILL LIFE.STILL LIFE is an interview-led zine that delves into the worlds of care, choreography and kink to explore pleasure, passivity and power. It is about relationships and configurations in which one person is still while others are not. Or where one person is passive and others are active. It’s about how we put ourselves in other people’s hands. Or how we are put in other people’s hands. It’s about care and power and vulnerability and agency. And other things not so clearly named. It’s about the different kinds of knowledge that people have about their own and other people’s bodies. And the kind of philosophical and political understandings woven into that knowledge.Natifah White is a Nottingham-based dance artist inspired by creative processes &amp; work that explore speculative dance futures. Her dance practice weaves archiving, research &amp; performance &amp; within these spaces, she has begun intertwining ways these descriptions nourish one another, whether through supporting another artist or her explorations. She is excited by the prospects that both archiving &amp; dancing can bring to her research as a physical activity &amp; she is particularly interested in do-it-yourself (and/ or together) practices like zine-making because of the possibilities it could bring to (expanded) dance and performance documentation.
