    This is a high intensity, results oriented, wildly engaged, high vibe, masterlass with, as the LA TImes called her - 'LA's godmother of alternative comedy'.

    The group is usually a mix of stand-ups, authors, podcasters, screenwriters, speakers and storytellers. All ready to reach their highest comedic potential.

    The workshop has proven to be life-changing. Many past participants have gone on to successful careers as touring comedians, authors, TV writers, graphic novelists, podcasters, TV directors, story slam winners. etc etc. Solo shows that have come out of this workshop have gone on to be fringe festival winners.

    In each of the four sessions you get time on your feet to perform, read or work in dialogue with Beth - and get direct and helpful feedback. Assignments will be individually given. Beth is well known as a direct but compassionate mentor, muse and advocate for performers.

    It helps performers focus, come to a greater understanding of their own work. Many comedy workshops will help you make one short set funnier. This one will give you a way to contunue to evolve your funniest and most authentic material long after the last session has ended. In each of the 4 sessions you get tools, techniques and secrets of the trade. Beth shares insider knowledge , cracking open the comedy and creativity processes she is intimately familiar with.

UnCabaret has had long running residencies at venues including HBO Workspace, LunaPark, The Knitting Factory, M Bar, AuLac, The Skirball Cultural Center and more. Plus toured to the HBO Comedy Arts Festival, Theater at The Ace, The Nimoy, and colleges and performing arts centers nationally. Currently UnCab is running monthly at El Cid.

Alex Edelman developed his hit show (B'way and Max) at UnCabaret. As did Julia Sweeney (God Said Ha!). Beth is the author of the critically acclaimed original audiobook So You Need To Decide. Vulture Top Comedy Books of 2022. "A potentially life changing treasure!" Variety. Her writing is included in several anthologies. Her critically acclaimed book of haiku Did I Wake You? was published by Soft Skull Press. She was featured in and on Vulture's Good One Podcast, Comedy Central, NPR's All Things Considered, Sex & The City, Will & Grace, Interview Magazine, O, Time Magazine, The LA Times, Elle Decor, Premier Magazine, LA Yoga and more.

She has a pilot in development with Emmy award winning producer Cary Brokaw/Avenue Pictures.

She's performed in countless comedy clubs including The Improv, The Comedy Store, Catch A Rising Star and The Laugh Factory.

Her most recent solo show It's A Lot was nominated for best cabaret show Palm Springs by Broadway World. She's toured her solo internationally and received several NEA's for that work.

She hosted aradio show for Comedy World Radio and her podcast, "Life & Beth" featured guests like Daniel Radcliffe, Lily Taylor, Ana Gasteyer, Willem Dafoe, Justin Willman, and more.
Beth is the creator and host of the UnCabaret spinoff show "The Other Network of UnAired Pilots," which toured to independent theaters and festivals including The Montreal Comedy Festival. It unearthed and screened mind-blowing, and previously unseen pilots by Conan O’Brien, Judd Apatow, Robert Smigel, Bob Odenkirk, Ben Stiller, Merrill Markoe and others, along with the stories of the creation and ultimate non-airing of the shows. The series was sparked by the cancellation of Beth's MTV talk show The Couch.

She's taught and lectured independently and at schools and institutions like UCLA Extension, Second City, IOWest, Actors Comedy Studio, Brown University, CSUN, SMoCA, UCLA Extension, Second City, IOWest, Kripalu Center for Yoga and Health, Erma Bombeck Institute etc.

Beth has a BA from Brown University in Modes of Expression and her visual work was exhibited at The Metropolitan Museum of Art's Library among others.

How many people is the group limited to?

Does everyone get a chance to share material in each session?

Yes!

Can I audit the class?

Yes there are audits available, single and for the whole session. There is a ton you can learn by auditing.

What if I miss a class?

We will miss you! But it's not a course where information is laid out sequentially. You can jump back in next session.

Is this available on zoom?

No this particular workshop is live and in person.

Can I record my sets?

Yes! Please do!

What if I have to leave early?

Please let us know at the beginning of class. You will learn more if you stay for the whole three hours but #life.

What do I need to bring to the first class?

Bring something to work on. It can be that five minute chunk that should be working better. It can be a bullet pointed story. It can be three ideas to explore. If you are not sure what to work on you can spend your time at the mic exploring with Beth what you should work on.

Will this be available again soon?

We're currently in residency at Rockwell Table and Stage on Second Sundays. We've had extended residencies at LunaPark, HBO Workspace, Skirball Cultural Center, The Knitting Factory, First & Hope/AuLac. We've toured and done pop-ups at The Getty, The Los Angeles Public Library Main Branch, The Laugh Factory, The Great American Music Hall, Knitting Factory NY, CAP/UCLA at The Theatre at Ace Hotel, Ace Palm Springs, Earlham College, Washington University and more.

We are an incubator and many projects, including Julia Sweeney’s 'God Said, Ha!' have come out of our Sunday nights.

.EDUOur .edu branch has been in operation for over a dozen years and our workshop, 'Infinite Writing' runs in 6 week cycles once a season in Los Anegles currently a Actors Comedy Studio. Beth Lapides teaches both this, the one day seminar 'You But Funnier', and works as a private creativity coach with clients and corporations. 

Classes have been presented by UCLA Extension, IOWest, The Skirball Cultural Center, mediabistro, Humber College for Comedy, Kripalu Center for Yoga and Health, LA Gay and Lesbian Center, PS 122, and Actors Comedy Studio.
