BYOC is a conversation series for creatives, by creatives, to help us become better at the work we produce. We are proud to have George Garrastegui and Kassia Graham moderating Beyond____: Cultural Appropriation and guiding our discussion. Cultural appropriation relies on a power imbalance that allows one group to take from another group without socially or financially compensating, and it aims to use the culture of a group for gain of some kind, whether physical, social, or monetary. This occurs frequently within the creative industry when brands and individuals use cultural symbols and imagery and fail to respect the culture in ways that support, elevate, and give credit to the community. Through conversation, inclusion, and intersectionality, we can identify examples of cultural appropriation and how to create work that respects cultures and the people that represent them.
