About this event

Women's Winter Camp and Hike in Bighorn Canyon National Recreation Area

When and Where:

Saturday February 25th - Sunday February 26th

We will meet in the parking lot of Bighorn Canyon National Recreation Area Visitors Center located in Lovell, WY (Not Fort Smith MT) @ 10:30 am.

From there we will have a 15 minute drive through the park and cross into Montana.

Then what?

From there we will drive through the beautiful park about 15 minutes to Barry's Island Trail Head. This is a gorgeous 4 mile hike that provides views of the canyon and the Big Horn Lake, different species of trees and native plants, and wildlife viewing opportunities.

After the hike we will head to camp at Trail Creek Campground, located about 3 miles from the trailhead. There are RV spots available as well as tent camping available. Bathrooms are maintained, though no other amenities. Bear vaults are provided at camp and there are fire rings. Will need to bring wood.

There is another hike that we can access on foot from the campground that takes us through a historical ranch, and an option to scramble a bit to the top (less than one mile) for views of both the Big Horn Mountains and the Pryor Mountain Range.

Other hikes in the area that I recommend you checking out while in the park include Sullivans Knob and Devil Lookout. There are historical ranches in the area including the Lockhart Ranch that are worth the time. Cover photo for event is from Devil Lookout.

Safety Considerations:

This is a winter camp and temps will get to below freezing. Please come prepared. Winter tips will be provided through WWE Montana Facebook group in Files one month prior to event.

Please Contact Mary Moore at maryrmoore.co@gmail.com or on Facebook if you have any questions.

For those that choose to tent camp, we will be within walking distance of our vehicles for quick access if needed. As long as no fire restrictions are put into place, I will have a fire going at night until 9 pm, and a GARMIN for offline communication and SOS if needed.
