Join WTS-KC for our Learn from a Leader program, where we'll be hearing from Vanessa Spartan. Vanessa is the Chief of Transportation Safety at the Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT), which strives to reduce traffic deaths, injuries, and crashes on all public roads in Kansas. The Bureau of Transportation Safety collects, analyzes, and shares crash data, works to improve road user behaviors and emergency response, coordinates traffic records projects for the State, and advances safety infrastructure projects, programs and policies. The Bureau also manages transportation safety reporting requirements to FHWA, NHTSA, NTSB, and the State of Kansas. Vanessa oversees the Kansas Drive To Zero initiative which engages hundreds of stakeholders with a shared responsibility for traffic safety in Kansas.

Prior to joining KDOT, Vanessa worked for the City of Tempe, Arizona and as a professional consultant in transportation planning and urban planning. Vanessa has worked with all levels of government, across nearly three dozen states. Vanessa holds a Bachelors degree in Urban Planning and Design, and a Masters degree in Public Affairs.
