Writing, Videos, Blogging: How to Make it Pay

with Lin Pardey

Location: Maritime Meeting Room, Northwest Maritime Center (upstairs)

Can you top up your cruising kitty by writing? By blogging or video? What will make your voyaging story stand out from the rest? What can you do to keep people watching your videos or reading your blog?

Lin Pardey will share tips and ideas for getting published in magazines and books. She’ll tell you how to get noticed by readers, viewers, editors, ways to present work that sells and ideas for expanding your markets.

A discussion of what returns you can expect for your work will be included along with the pitfalls and the practicalities of adding writing and photography to your cruising life. Book Writing and publishing will be covered, including the realities of self-publishing.

The discussion on creating sailing videos and distribution realities is based on her experience as creator and co-producer of 5 successful DVD programs. Condensed versions of these programs have appeared on PBS and are streamed on Vimeo and other platforms.

The Video blogging section includes up to date facts and figures from the creators of several of the more popular cruising video sites.

Over all the emphasis is on story telling and how to enjoyably and convincingly convey the lessons you have learned through pictures, video and words.

About Lin Pardey:

Lin Pardey’s worst subject through her schooling career was writing. Yet she wrote her first sailing article three years after she started voyaging with Larry on board their 24 foot self-built, engine-free cutter Seraffyn. During the next 45 years literally hundreds of her articles have appeared in magazines around the world. She has, with Larry, written 12 books which have been translated into 6 different languages and sold more than 350,000 copies. Together the Pardey’s produced five video programs and became some of the first cruising bloggers (though when this started their bi-monthly on line postings were called “Newsletters.” The first seven of Lin’s books were published by major New York Houses including W.W. Norton and McGraw Hill. Several years ago, she began publishing her own titles. This lead to Lin publishing five nautical titles by other sailors under the L&L Pardey logo. More recently Lin has begun voyaging again and filling the quiet times afforded by being at sea by writing articles and a new book.
