Writing in Relation: A Poetry Workshop Inspired by Édouard Glissant
Presented in Collaboration with poet Isaiah G. (@igwhiz)

Art is about self-expression. As such, many emerging poets turn inward—writing about themselves, their emotions, their truths. While this instinct is natural and vital, writing just about oneself can feel hollow when held up against the urgent, burning realities of the world around us.
Writing in Relation invites poets—new and experienced alike—to shift their gaze outward. Grounded in the ideas of Martinican poet-philosopher Édouard Glissant, this participatory workshop will explore how poetry can develop into a space of connection: to place, to history, to others, and to the world. We’ll ask how our writing might become not just an act of self-discovery, but a gesture toward relation—resonant, responsive, and alive with context.

Together, we’ll read, write, reflect, and share. This is not a lecture, but a space for creative risk, collective thinking, and poetic growth. Bring your pen, your questions, and your willingness to engage.

Whether you’ve published or are just beginning, come prepared to connect—with language, with each other, and with the world.

We aim to partner with places that can feasibly host art on their walls for 30 days or longer, and have foot traffic space for events;receptions;open mics. We also hope that these businesses will support the event’s success with freebies like a first round on the house/ a discount on a product purchase at the event, etc.

Energy Exchange Events: We propose that Collide events are free and donation based unless otherwise agreed on, and that the cost for the venue’s rent be minimal or none. In exchange, Collide will promote the business hosting the event on Eventbrite, social media platforms, email blasts to members, and in a written shoutout in all of our printed issues for that quarter (new issue prints every 3 months)
