Writing Fortran 2018 Today: Object-Oriented Parallel Programming

Fortran 2018 empowers computational scientists to write high-performing parallel programs that scale from single-socket, shared-memory execution up to massively parallel, distributed-memory execution without explicitly referening any external parallel programming models (e.g, MPI or OpenMP).  Object-oriented programming (OOP) plays an essential role in making such programs  asynchronous and fault-tolerant.  Recent compiler releases offer an exciting opportunity for widespread evaluation and adoption of Fortran 2018 today.  This course will emphasize the synergy between OOP and parallelism through  four themes in four days:
1. Introduction to parallel programming.
2. Introduction to OOP.
3. Advanced parallel programming.
4. Best practices in Object-Oriented Design (patterns).
The course will comprise roughly equal proportions of lecture, live coding demonstrations, and hands-on exercises. Attendees will work on their own computers inside Linux virtual machines containing the GNU Compiler Collection (GCC) Fortran, C, and C++ compilers, the OpenCoarrays parallel runtime library, and other open-source tools that will be employed in the course:

<LI>Distributed source mangement with git and GitHub.</LI>
<LI>Cross-platform building with CMake.</LI>
<LI>Unit testing with CTest.</LI>
<LI>Automatic documentation generation with FORD.</LI>
<LI>Reverse engineering of OOD diagrams with ForUML.</LI>
<LI>Parallel performance engineering with TAU.</LI>
</UL>
Attendees will also gain exposure to several agile development practices, including test-driven development, continuous integration, and pair programming.  All attendees will receive a paperback copy of Scientific Software Design: The Object-Oriented Way (Cambridge University Press, 2011).
