About this event

  • 1 hour 30 minutes

MahoganyBooks is known for our amazing programming, and we are thrilled to add this phenomenal workshop to our lineup featuring our friend and the esteemed Poet Laureate of Prince George's County, Maryland , Dr. Khadijah Ali-Coleman, as she facilitates the powerful Writing For Liberation workshop experience.

About the workshop: In a world where the act of creation can be both a personal and political declaration, "Writing for Liberation" emerges as not just a workshop, but a journey towards self-discovery and societal change. Facilitated by Khadijah Ali-Coleman, the 2023-2026 Poet Laureate of Prince George's County, Maryland, this 60-minute workshop aims to heal and liberate the inner muse of each participant, connecting their work to the broader practice of liberation through guided exercises rooted in expressive writing and reflective practice.

This sacred time will serve as a stepping stone, encouraging participants to connect with fellow writers who share a vision for writing as a liberative practice. Attendees will have the opportunity to sign up for further workshops and courses with Khadijah, ensuring their journey of writing and liberation continues beyond this initial workshop.

Who is the workshop for? You! This workshop is designed for writers of all levels who are seeking to deepen their practice and connect their work to larger themes of liberation and social justice. Poetry and excerpts from plays and fiction will be shared as examples of liberative practice. Participants do not have to identify as a writer of one particular genre. Whether you're a seasoned writer or just beginning to explore your voice, "Writing for Liberation" offers valuable insights and exercises to enhance your writing and connect it with your personal and political ideals.

About the facilitator: Khadijah Ali-Coleman, EdD is a multidisciplinary artist and educator whose work spans across poetry, playwriting, performance and academic scholarship. As the Poet Laureate of Prince George's County, Maryland, Khadijah has dedicated her career to empowering voices through the arts, with a particular focus on liberation practices through writing.
