What is Write Your Crown?

Write Your Crown is a virtual creative writing program presented by KCRS Youth Empowerment. The program gives participants a supportive space to strengthen their writing skills, explore their creativity, build confidence, and learn to express themselves through writing.

Who can participate?

The program is open to participants ages 9 and older. Participants will be separated into two age groups:

Ages 9–15: 6:00 PM–7:00 PM;
Ages 16+: 7:00 PM–8:00 PM

Where will the sessions take place?

All sessions will be held virtually on Zoom. Registered participants will receive information about accessing the sessions.

When does the program run?

Write Your Crown will run from October 5, 2026 through May 31, 2027, meeting primarily on the 2nd and 4th Mondays, with select 5th Monday sessions.

KCRS will observe applicable federal and state holidays, so the schedule may be adjusted when necessary.

Is there a cost to participate?

No. Write Your Crown is free, but advance registration is required.

When is the registration deadline?

Registration must be completed by September 18, 2026.

Question 7

Does my child need previous writing experience?

Accepted Answer

No. Participants do not need previous creative writing experience. The program is designed to support different writing abilities and encourage participants to develop their skills over time.

Question 8

What types of writing will participants learn?

Accepted Answer

Activities may include creative writing prompts, journaling, poetry, storytelling, personal narratives, affirmations, vocabulary building, letters, and other forms of written self-expression. Older participants may also explore practical writing such as cover letters, and professional communication.

What will participants need?

Participants should have access to Zoom, a journal or notebook, and a pencil. Additional materials will be communicated in advance when needed.

Does my child need to keep their camera on?

Accepted Answer

Participants are encouraged to have their cameras on when possible to help create an engaging and interactive environment. Accommodations can be discussed when needed.

Are participants required to share what they write?

Accepted Answer

Participants will be encouraged to participate and share, but we understand that some writing may be personal. The goal is to create a respectful environment where participants can build confidence at their own pace.

Who will lead the program?

The program will be led by Leah Block, the Creative Writing Lead Instructor, with support from Shamia Hicks-Columbus and Maneisha Jenkins to assist participants and help maintain a positive, supportive virtual environment.

Question 13

Is this a therapy or counseling program?

Accepted Answer

No. Write Your Crown is a creative writing and enrichment program.  It is not therapy, counseling, or a licensed clinical service.

What are the expectations for participants?

Accepted Answer

Participants are expected to be respectful, participate appropriately, follow Zoom guidelines, and help maintain a safe and welcoming environment for everyone.
