Workshop: Practical Tools for Facilitation

The Technology of Participation (ToP) methods helps group think, talk and work together by providing facilitators with structured methods to:
•  Recognize and honor contributions of all •  Let a group deal with more data in less time •  Pool individual contributions into larger more informative and inclusive patterns •  Welcome diversity while minimizing polarization and conflict
The three methods we will focus on are:
1.  The Focused Conversation – allows the facilitator to guide the conversation while providing meaningful dialogue. When a conversation has no structure, there is often no way to ensure that each person’s thinking patterns can be dealt with productively. This is when chaos, conflict and discouragement can result. This method honors each participant’s wisdom and builds on it to arrive at a common understanding.   2. Consensus Workshop – a way to come to consensus in a short period of time through a collective integrated thinking process. When consensus is reached, all participants feel their ideas, insights, perspectives and wisdom have been honored and the consensus includes their ideas. When consensus is reached each member of the group has ownership of the entire group’s decisions.   3. Action Planning – designed to allow those responsible for implementing a project, designing a campaign, or planning an event to plan together how to accomplish the task.  *Can be used for any event with a clear beginning and a clear end.

Previously, she was the bilingual Health Educator for the Chronic Disease Prevention division at Tarrant County Health Department in Fort Worth, Texas. Prior to that, she managed the Migrant Health Network in rural Virginia, and served as a rural health Peace Corps volunteer in El Salvador. She has been trained as a medical interpreter in English – Spanish to enhance communication in the health care setting. She is a training and outreach specialist. She received a bachelor’s degree in Cultural Anthropology from Arizona State University, a Master of Public Health degree (MPH) from UNT Health Science Center. She is also a Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES).
