What oh what do owls hunt… and eat? Learn all about it in a hands-on workshop with environmental educator and Board Member Dr. Linda Burke.

Owls are raptor predators whose prey includes many different animals. What oh what are they hunting? They hunt at night and swallow their prey whole, bones and all, in one bite. The meat is broken down by enzymes, but the hair or feathers and bones cannot be used. Owls rid themselves of this waste by a method unique to them; their stomach muscles press the hair or feathers of the prey around the bones to make a cushioned ball with the bones packed inside - the pellet - which is then regurgitated. By sorting the bones from a pellet, the kind and amount of prey the owl has eaten can be determined - will they be voles, mice, rats, birds, or moles? All equipment will be provided – including the pellets!Sunday, November 10, 1:00-3:00pm. Cost: $10 members, $15 non-members which will cover all materials and an information packet. Class size is limited to 12 dissectors; children are welcome but must be 10 years of age or older and accompanied by an adult.
