This workshop focuses on theory and applications in the emerging field of quantum algorithms and their applications to problems in science and engineering. Two special areas of focus are Quantum Machine Learning and Quantum Control.Join us for an exciting workshop that brings together two of the most promising fields of modern technology: quantum machine learning and quantum control. In this workshop, you will learn about the latest developments in these fields and how they are changing the landscape of modern computing and control systems.Quantum machine learning is a fascinating field that brings together two challenging areas of research: classical machine learning and artificial intelligence, and quantum physics. This interdisciplinary field has already yielded practical research programs, exploring the possibilities of using quantum information processing to improve classical machine learning, and vice versa. With quantum computers' ability to perform calculations using qubits, quantum machine learning algorithms can solve complex problems that are currently beyond the capabilities of classical computers. Machine learning, on the other hand, enables the creation of algorithms that learn from data and improve their performance over time. The potential for revolutionary advances in drug discovery, optimization, and cryptography is immense, and quantum machine learning promises to play a significant role in shaping the future of these fields. Additionally, quantum machine learning raises fundamental questions about the limits and meaning of learnability in a quantum world, and how artificial intelligence can assist in scientific research and our everyday lives.Quantum optimal control is a rapidly developing field that is critical for the advancement of quantum technologies. It seeks to find the best way to control and manipulate quantum systems to achieve specific goals while minimizing the effects of unwanted interactions. This field plays a crucial role in quantum computing and quantum information processing, where precise control over individual qubits or quantum gates is necessary for achieving high-fidelity quantum operations. Quantum optimal control techniques also have important applications in developing quantum sensors and communication systems.

Michael Mc Gettrick is a lecturer in the School of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences at the University of Galway. His main research interests are in the theory of quantum computation. Though currently working in a “maths department”, he previously worked in the computer science department at the University of Galway, and holds a PhD in String theory from the University of Notre Dame (Indiana). He has worked in theoretical high energy physics, computer algebra, discrete event dynamical systems and quantum computing.

Anton Dekusar is a Research Scientist who has been with IBM Research since 2017. His current area of expertise is in quantum machine learning and optimization algorithms specifically designed for quantum computing. He actively contributes to Qiskit Machine Learning. Before joining IBM Quantum, he dedicated his efforts to developing software services for the transportation industry. During this time, he explored the application of machine learning and deep learning techniques to enhance service quality.

Invited Speaker 1: Dr Anton Dekusar (IBM Dublin)

Lunch

Senior Expert Data Scientist at Alstom, France, joined the company in 2015 to work on development of algorithms for Prognostics and Health Management. He is also Adjunct Professor at Trinity College Dublin, Ireland, from where he received his PhD in 2013. He co-authored more than 30 scientific papers published in different international peer-reviewed journals and conferences.

Rafael Lahoz-Beltra is an Associate Professor at Complutense University of Madrid. With 59 scientific articles, 12 books, and 62 conference papers, he leads the research group 'Modelling, Data Analysis and Computational Methods in Biology'. Rafael has been a Fulbright Scholar and received international scholarships at the University of Nottingham and University of Stirling. He holds a patent and three entrepreneurship awards. His research spans cellular automata, neural networks, molecular automata, and self-assembly in structural biology. He explores evolutionary computation, bio-inspired algorithms, and synthetic biology. Rafael also investigates quantum computing in biology, sentiment analysis in AI, and empathic chatbot design. His work aims to understand information processing and intelligent behavior in living organisms, inspiring practical applications of bio-inspired algorithms and AI models.

Keynote 3: Prof Rafael Beltra (Complutense University of Madrid)

Abhishek Agarwal is a Higher Scientist at the National Physical Laboratory (NPL). He graduated with a degree in Physics and Philosophy from University of Oxford (MPhysPhil) in 2020 and has since been working at NPL. His research interests include modelling noise in quantum computers and developing quantum algorithms for materials simulations.

Keynote 4: Mr Abhishek Agarwal (NPL, UK)

Ratna Dutta received her B.Sc. and M.Sc. in Applied Mathematics from the University of Calcutta. She earned her Ph.D. from the Indian Statistical Institute, Kolkata, and conducted post-doctoral research in cryptography and security at the Institute for Infocomm Research, Singapore. She served as a post-doctoral research fellow at the Claude Shannon Institute, Maynooth University. Currently an associate professor at the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur, Ratna's research interests include functional encryption, attribute-based cryptosystems, elliptic curves, pairing-based cryptography, obfuscation, post-quantum cryptography, and multilinear maps. She has published papers in reputable journals and conferences, such as ACM Computing Surveys, Theoretical Computer Science, Algorithmica, IEEE Transactions on Information Theory, Design, Codes and Cryptography, PKC, ACISP, ACNS, ISC, ICISC. Ratna also serves as a reviewer for esteemed international publications and conferences.
