Development of Specialist Cancer Care Competencies for NHS Wales and associated Qualification at Level 4

Consultation Workshops

The Cancer Network has been working via their Multiprofessional forum (Health Board lead cancer nurses & allied health professionals) and Health Education and Improvement Wales (HEIW) to develop a career pathway for specialist support workers working in cancer care. The aim is to develop a national competency framework for level 2-4 healthcare support workers (inclusive of all unregistered workforce working at levels 2-4) that will provide a definitive career and development pathway for individuals aspiring to work in cancer care.

Competencies have been developed by the cancer network multi-professional forum that coincided with the UK wide Aspirant Cancer Career and Education Development Programme (ACCEND) (Assistive and supportive only) framework developed by Health Education England. Both the Welsh competencies and the ACCEND Programme aims to provide transformational reform for the career pathways and associated education, training, learning and development opportunities for the workforce at all levels to develop the core knowledge, skills, and behaviours to care for people affected by cancer. The ACCEND framework has been mapped to Specialist Cancer Care Competencies for NHS Wales to ensure all learning outcomes are compatible at the following levels:

- Supportive

- Assistive

- Pre-registration

Views during this consultation will initially be sought from the lead cancer nurses and AHP’s across Wales and then wider with the following clinical staff groups from the NHS, Social Care, Community, and independent contractors: -

· Medical and Dental

· Nursing and Midwifery

· Allied Health Professionals

· Healthcare Science

· Welsh Government

· National Strategic Network for Cancer

· Service users
