Workshop: Community asset mapping

Kokila Annamalai is a community organiser, researcher, writer and facilitator based in Singapore. She has had over 10 years of experience in community-building and social justice work, focused on amplifying voices and movements from the margins.  She holds workshops and training sessions on topics related to community development, restorative processes, transformative action and inclusive practices.

A training workshop on bringing communities together to map their individual and shared assets.  

Asset mapping is an energising process that brings communities together, enables mutual aid, shared meaning-making, dream-building and problem-solving. The first step of asset-based community development, asset mapping deepens the sense of ownership and pride a community has over its tangible and intangible resources, and starts conversations on how our individual assets can be powerful and productive together. It allows communities on the margins to take collective action from a place of abundance. Through inviting the wisdom of different members of the community, asset mapping exercises center the community&#x27;s diverse forms of knowledge, skills, networks, interests, aspirations and capacities. Asset mapping can be used in neighbourhoods, classroom, organisations as well as with any distinct group bound by a shared identity/purpose. This workshop will equip participants with asset mapping tools that can be used across contexts. Using a mix of case studies and interactive exercises, we will go through the different stages of an asset mapping process, from gathering the community to presenting the findings in forms that enable future action. Community-based practitioners (artists/cultural workers/social workers/community workers/organisers), educators, and anyone who is interested in starting or deepening their practice in cultural mapping/community asset mapping, community development or strengths-based practices is welcome. Details:The participation fee is $25. You will receive the Zoom link for the session, reading materials and other instructions by email once you sign-up. The maximum number of participants for this workshop is 30 pax. About the trainer:Kokila Annamalai is a community organiser, researcher, writer and facilitator based in Singapore. She has had over 10 years of experience in community-building and social justice work. She is trained in Family Group Conferencing, Community Conferencing, Community Building Workshop (CBW), Asset-Based Community Development and other modalities of facilitation, training and community-based practice/organisation. She has organised with rural Dalit communities in India, and with migrant domestic workers, low-income families, violence survivors, LGBT communities, marginalised youth, and various civil society and arts groups in Singapore.For enquiries, please contact Kokila at communityclassroom.sg@gmail.com.
