Working with Student with Complex Social Needs

Teaching Artist Project is a collective of diversely experienced arts educators training emerging and working teaching artists who are looking for a supportive community to engage in a self-reflective, justice-oriented learning practice in service of their teaching. The program entails a rigorous, 8-month curriculum, rich in social justice-based pedagogy that also provides supervised on-the-job experience.

<h2>Working with Students with Complex Social Needs</h2><p><br></p><p>This session focuses on supporting students who navigate housing instability, family stress, trauma histories, unmet basic needs, and other complex social barriers. Building on the foundations of behavioral change, active listening, and Motivational Interviewing, participants explore how to recognize the impact of structural inequities, chronic stress, and competing survival demands on student behavior and engagement. The workshop emphasizes meeting students where they are by understanding developmental readiness, emotional bandwidth, cultural context, and the systemic forces shaping their daily lives. Participants also learn how to interpret behavior through the lens of capability, opportunity, and motivation and how to respond in ways that promote dignity, safety, and trust.</p><p>The session introduces practical tools for building strong, supportive relationships with students who are often misunderstood or overdisciplined. Participants learn strategies for trauma-informed communication, autonomy-supportive choices, and boundary setting that balances compassion with stability. We also examine how to navigate moments of crisis or dysregulation, foster engagement without over-functioning, and use MI skills to help students articulate goals that feel achievable within their current life circumstances. By the end of the workshop, educators will be able to create learning environments that are responsive to the realities students carry, support positive student teacher relationships, and promote growth even in the presence of significant social and emotional challenges.</p>
