ACT | The App Association

Summary: ACT | The App Association is convening a one-day public workshop in Huntington, WV, featuring local lawmakers, thought leaders, educators, and students to explore the benefits of workforce development and computer science education, learn new skills, and explore a variety of tools through intro to coding workshops.

About the Workshop: At 5.1 percent, West Virginia has the third-highest unemployment rate in the country. The workforce development issues that West Virginia faces go beyond the need for K-12 STEM education and require a rethinking of employment for the existing workforce. 
The good news is that the state of West Virginia has a strong workforce development program that includes the K-12 population, as well as the existing workforce. The coding workshops aim to build on that foundation. 
During the workshop, attendees will have the opportunity to: (1) Observe and participate in a panel discussion around the benefits of workforce development and computer science education (CSE); (2) Learn new skills and explore a variety of tools through intro to coding workshops and; (3) Network with fellow attendees and panel participants.

9:00 a.m. - Registration/Breakfast
9:30 a.m. - Opening Remarks delivered by President of the App Associate Morgan Reed and Dean of Marshall University’s College of Information Technology and Engineering (CITE) Dr. Wael Zatar. Greeting from Congresswoman Carol Miller (WV-3) by Kyra Biscarner. Keynote delivered by Mayor Steve Williams. 
10:00 a.m. - Panel 1 - The State of Play in Workforce Development and Computer Science Education in West Virginia – The “Who, What, When, Where, Why, and How” of workforce development and computer science education. The panel will be moderated by the president of the App Association, Morgan Reed, and participants will include:

11:45 a.m. - Panel 2 – Mind Crafters: An In-depth Look at Computer Science Implementation in K-12 Schools – A look at the challenges, benefits, and future of Computer Science Education implementation in K-12 schools. The panel will be moderated by the president of the App Association, Morgan Reed, and participants will include:

12:30 p.m. - Lunch
2:00 p.m. - Coding Workshops - Workshops will be divided into two tracks:
<UL>
<LI>K-12 Track: Focus on the benefits associated with taking computer science courses, participation in coding and programming clubs, and finding mentors to help in their journey. The workshop will kick of with a presentation by Todd I. Ensign, Program Manager, NASA. Following that presentation, Tamara Westfall will lead a first look at a hands-on coding workshop. </LI>
<LI>Existing Workforce Track: Focus on apprenticeships and on-the-job training to complement existing skills or vocational training and other efforts. The workshop will kick of with a presentation from Todd Cope, CEO of CentralApp. The workshop will also highlight member company Bit Source and give participants an opportunity to participate in an introductory workshop led by Jamie Adams of Bit Source. </LI>

3:30 p.m. - Closing remarks by president of the App Association, Morgan Reed
4:00 p.m. - Network with fellow attendees, as well as panel and workshop participants, at Fat Patty's in downtown Huntington.
