About this event

Do you know your neighbors? Do you want to know your neighbors? Do you like brunch?

Welcome to gastrochurch. We do intentional conversations about spiritual things over really good food. We set a table and invite people from any background, culture, worldview, and identity. It's kind of a mashup between a dinner party and a small group, only with people you might otherwise never meet.

Here's how it works: when you show up, grab a drink - your choice, a glass of wine, beer, growler of cold brew or one of our other fun non-alcoholic beverages. You'll sit at a table of six with people you may or may not know. Over the course of the meal, we'll give you three questions, meant to get you talking about something more substantive than the weather. You spend about 90 minutes eating, drinking, talking, laughing, connecting, and potentially meeting your new best friend. And then you go home and tell everyone how awesome it was and how you can't wait to come to the next gathering.

Fred Rogers showed us the power of kindness and compassion and brought new meaning to the word neighbor. Living in the 4th largest city in America, can make it difficult to get to know your neighbor. Cue places and people like Central City Co-Op, Grace in the Heights, and gastrochurch, doing what we can to help you connect with the little pockets of community around you.

Join us for brunch at Central City Co-Op on May 4th for some good eats, good drinks, and good conversation.

As always, gastrochurch is BYOFB, so bring your own favorite beverage and a friend who you would like to see across the table!

P SA: We never want the cost of tickets to be a barrier to someone. Please reach out to the director of gastrochurch, Haley if you need assistance with a ticket. Contact Haley at 281-797-6754 or by email at haley@gastrochurch.org

Most of our conversation every day is surface-level. How many conversations do you spend talking about the weather? Netflix? How busy you are? We can easily go through life without ever talking about things that actually matter. Gastrochurch is a gathering to talk about things that matter, especially spiritual things. We talk about forgiveness, justice, growth, disappointment, gratitude, etc. And we do it over food. Something happens when you share a really good meal that makes meaningful conversation easier. We love getting creative with our themes and menus, and seeing where the food takes us. It's up to you how deep you want to go. You choose to sit with people you know well, or with people you don't. You choose how much you share. Sometimes tables connect deeply, sometimes they don't. Sometimes the evening is hilarious, sometimes it's reflective. But it's rarely boring. Each evening has a theme, and our themes center on issues in the Christian scriptures. For example, we might focus on a theme of simplicity and serve traditional monastic food, or we might focus on gratitude and serve thanksgiving foods from around the world. With each course, a facilitator gives a brief reflection on the theme, and then gives a discussion question for the table. The questions are intentionally vulnerable; we're not here to talk about the weather.  At the end of the meal the leaders gather to share Communion and prayer. All are welcome to participate in Communion, to stay and keep talking at the tables, or to leave and get on with their evenings. We have gatherings monthly, and they are open to anyone. Our tables are filled with people from all walks of life and all varieties of belief (or lack thereof). We mean it when we say that everyone is welcome at the table.  After that, just give what you can.  We love to discuss all things related to food, church, and anything in between.
