The Department of Angels is an independent nonprofit founded in the immediate aftermath of the January 2025 Los Angeles fires. Our mission is to ensure that fire-impacted communities in Los Angeles lead their own recovery — on their terms — with the support, resources, and expertise they need to thrive.

The Department of Angels and Extreme Weather Survivors invite all Angelenos to walk with LA fire survivors through sight, sound, and story.

As the one year mark of the LA Fires approaches, the Department of Angels and Extreme Weather Survivors are bringing together Angelenos of all ages for a citywide moment of remembrance, healing, and collective action. Our event, With Us, is designed to bridge communities, honor the progress and healing already underway, and spotlight the urgent change survivors still need for Los Angeles to fully recover.At the center of the gathering is an interactive storytelling installation that reflects the winding road survivors have traveled. Attendees will be immersed in a one-of-a-kind labyrinth of audio and visual art storytelling that explores how recovery is not linear and why long-term support still matters. With more than 70 percent of displaced survivors still out of their homes, we know that rebuilding can’t happen alone––we need all of us to be involved.---------Attendees are welcome to drop by at any point between 12pm and 4pm. The event has moved fully indoors, and will proceed rain or shine. A speaking program will take place at 1pm, featuring faith leaders, artists, and survivors from both the Eaton and Palisades fire-impacted communities, alongside the founders of the Department of Angels, Evan Spiegel and Miguel Santana, and Extreme Weather Survivors co-founder Sierra Kos.----------PARKING - We have free parking available:<ul><li>Park at the City Market North Parking Lot located at 633 E 11th Street, on the corner of 11th Street and San Pedro Street.</li><li>Use the code phrase “With Us” to access pre-paid parking. This is first-come, first-serve between Noon - 4PM on January 4th.</li><li>Access the venue by going across 11th Street into the alley, going south (toward 12th). The venue entrance will be on your left. See map <a href="https://drive.google.com/file/d/1ZKyESu8IGSegSHUBT1mrpMMscK-IRLyK/view?usp=sharing" title="https://drive.google.com/file/d/1ZKyESu8IGSegSHUBT1mrpMMscK-IRLyK/view?usp=sharing" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">here</a>.</li></ul>Please bring a small umbrella for the short walk from the parking lot to the venue entrance.----------Community organizations will provide resources and guidance on how all Angelenos can step in to help recovery efforts. Additional programming will include:<ul><li>Immersive Storytelling Experience: Guests will move through a large-scale storytelling labyrinth created in collaboration with survivors. The installation blends personal testimony, soundscapes, visual art, and research to show the emotional, financial, and physical challenges families face one year after the fires. Survivor reflections and calls to action throughout the space will help visitors understand what long-term recovery requires and why continued support matters.</li><li>Love Letters to LA: KCRW will conduct live recordings of its “<a href="https://deptofangels.us3.list-manage.com/track/click?u=4e00188fc55be769edb21608e&amp;id=0c0fc732c8&amp;e=50c2f5e015" title="https://deptofangels.us3.list-manage.com/track/click?u=4e00188fc55be769edb21608e&amp;id=0c0fc732c8&amp;e=50c2f5e015" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Love Letters to LA</a>” series throughout the day, inviting attendees to write messages to their neighborhoods and the city to honor the places they love and support communities still recovering. Those stories will be shared throughout the week of the one-year anniversary of the fires.</li><li><a href="https://deptofangels.us3.list-manage.com/track/click?u=4e00188fc55be769edb21608e&amp;id=a9d7b690ca&amp;e=50c2f5e015" title="https://deptofangels.us3.list-manage.com/track/click?u=4e00188fc55be769edb21608e&amp;id=a9d7b690ca&amp;e=50c2f5e015" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Project: Camp</a> will lead a series of healing activities for children. They will be hosting a dedicated kids space with camp-style programming, accommodating up to 30 children at a time on a first-come, first-served basis. Please note: parents who want to step away for a moment can do so! Project: Camp is hosted by licensed trauma-informed caregivers.</li><li><a href="https://supportandfeed.org/" title="https://supportandfeed.org/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Support and Feed</a> will be leading a plant-based food drive benefitting the communities impacted by the fires. Attendees are encouraged to participate by donating non-perishable plant-based food items such as: canned beans, corn, peas, green beans, and rice.</li></ul>
