WITH

The Disabled List is a curated list of creative disabled people who are available to consult, collaborate and support brands that are interested in reaching their disabled consumers. The DL is shifting the disability narrative by ensuring disabled people are treated as the experts in disability. And through a program called WITH, The DL is creating new pathways into design for disabled people.

The Disabled List

The phrase ‘design for disability’ encapsulates how disabled people have traditionally experienced the design process. Products and solutions are often designed for us but rarely with us.
Yet, our passion and drive, and most importantly, our creativity have been known to change the world. Disability ingenuity has led to such ubiquitous designs as the bicycle, the iPhone touchscreen and curb cuts. 
What happens when the design world harnesses our unique skill sets? This event will demonstrate the value of designing WITH, rather than for, disability.

<A HREF="http://heidilatskydance.org/on-display-1/" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">ON DISPLAY</A> is a deconstructed art exhibit/fashion show and commentary on the body as spectacle and society's obsession with body image. It turns a cast of diverse and extreme bodies into a sculpture court where the performers are the sculptures. ON DISPLAY began as a simple human sculpture court and is now a movement, a growing portfolio of works that explore and demonstrate inclusion through art. ON DISPLAY is a program of <A HREF="https://heidilatskydance.org/" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Heidi Latsky Dance</A>.
<A HREF="http://www.shannonfinnegan.com/" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Shannon Finnegan </A>is a disabled artist based in Brooklyn. Recent solo exhibitions include Good Days & Bad Days at Xiyi Gallery in Chengdu, China; Self Portrait at The Invisible Dog in Brooklyn, NY; and DUEL at OUTLET Fine Art in Brooklyn, NY. She was nominated for the 2014 Rema Hort Mann Foundation Emerging Artist Grant and received a 2018 Wynn Newhouse Award. Shannon has been a resident at the Wassaic Project and a visiting artist at the University of Iowa, Carleton College, and the UMass Amherst Professional Outreach Program.
<A HREF="https://www.greatbigstory.com/stories/dancing-professionally-with-cerebral-palsy" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Jerron Herman</A> is a dancer/writer and Administrator, splitting his time between the dance studio and the offices of Heidi Latsky Dance where he’s been a proud principal member since 2011. As a dancer, Jerron was featured in an LA Press Club winning piece by John Bathke, “Open Studio with Jared Bowen” for PBS, and most recently a profile on dancing with Cerebral Palsy by Great Big Story. This is his first visual art collaboration.
<A HREF="https://mamacax.com/about-4/" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Mama Cax</A> is a Haitian-American Blogger & Disability Advocate. She consults with fashion brands and non-profits on the diversity & inclusion of people with disabilities. Cax uses social media as a platform to talk about body positivity so she can dismantle the image of what people with disabilities should be or look like. Her innovative prosthetic leg and message on body positivity has landed her features in such magazines as TeenVogue, Cosmopolitan, Essence Magazine and Glamour. Mama Cax is currently represented by JAG Models.
<A HREF="http://www.thegirlwiththepurplecane.com/" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Liz Jackson</A> is the founder of <A HREF="http://inclusivecollective.org/" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Inclusive Collective</A>, a disability design organization that is focused on increasing the impact of beautiful, functional products in our everyday lives and in the global economy. Liz is committed to shifting the disability narrative, as current mainstream representations of disability do not accurately portray disabled lives. She is currently focused on creating pathways into design for disabled people through initiatives such as <A HREF="http://disabledlist.org/" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">The Disabled List</A>, a curated list of creative disabled people who are available to consult and collaborate. 
<A HREF="http://ryhartley.com/" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Ryan Hartley Smith</A> is an illustrator based in New York City. His practice encompasses print, animation, and theatrical projection design. Smith's work has been presented at the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, Tribeca Film Festival Community Series, BRIC, ICON9, Miami New World Symphony, and Bowdoin International Music Festival. He has received recognition from the Society of Illustrators, American Illustration, and Latin American Ilustración. Smith is an Assistant Professor in the Design Program at CUNY Queens College.
<A HREF="https://www.sypartners.com/leader/rie-norregaard/" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Rie Norregaard</A> is passionate about design as an act of service—from designing more inclusive organizations to reimagining how an ordinary product, such as a cane, can become extraordinary for the person who uses it. As the Managing Creative Director of SYPartners, Rie helps clients envision and build a future that’s made for all of us—and the best of us. Previously, Rie worked as a creative director at leading design firms, such as Smart Design, Organic, Quirky, and Frog Design. Outside of her role at SYPartners, Rie is an advisor to several tech and consumer product start-ups, and is a frequent speaker in the international design and design education communities.
