Winter Survival and Foraging Program

The Institute for American Indian Studies preserves and educates through discovery and creativity the diverse traditions, vitality and knowledge of Native American cultures. Located on 15 acres of woodland IAIS is home to permanent and temporary exhibits, nature trails, a replicated 16th century ReplicatedAlgonkianvillage. During the school year over 7,000 school age children visit for hands on programs to learn about the Indigenous people who have called Connecticut home for thousands of years.

Would you have what it takes to thrive in the New England winters without twenty-first century technology? Perhaps you’ve wondered how Native Americans were able to start a fire in the snow, find food, or make shelter. This year, there will be a special focus on foraging, processing and storing available food sources during the winter. Come “chill” with Wigwam Escape Creative Director and Museum Educator Griffin Kalin for an interactive and informative outdoor program, appropriate for all ages. As this is an outdoor event, please dress appropriately for the weather. Space is limited and pre-registration is required. Masks are required inside the museum until further notice. Questions?
