1 Peter: Living as Strangers in a Secular World

Martin Luther placed 1 Peter alongside Romans and John as the foremost witnesses to the gospel in the New Testament. Luther was surely right, but 1 Peter’s witness to the gospel is forged in the crucible of suffering and hardship. Despite what movies or cartoons might indicate, becoming a follower of Jesus does not result in a life of ease followed by floating into heaven on marshmallow like clouds. 1 Peter teaches that the life of the Christ follower is more likely to follow the way of the Christ: Jesus suffered and so will we. The gospel declares that we are strangers living in a fallen world. This reality results in conflict, alienation, and suffering. The Christ that is the center of this letter suffered. The author, Peter, suffered verbal and physical abuse for preaching in the name of Jesus and ultimately suffered a martyr’s death. And of course, the audience Peter addressed suffered. Peter’s purpose in writing was to motivate and encourage those who follow Christ to persevere and maintain their faithfulness regardless of what difficulties might come. And this letter continues to speak today. 1 Peter calls us to bear witness to our faith even in the midst of suffering and hardship. 1 Peter also calls us to live a life of integrity and love in the midst of suffering and hardship. As we do, we follow in the footsteps of Jesus.
