Forestland owners, join us on Sunday, June 9th, 11am-4pm for this FREE workshop to learn about Wildfire Resilience Tools for Lower Russian River Communities!
As a Russian River forestland owner, you know the forest is an asset worth protecting. Its natural beauty, open space, abundant wildlife, and fresh air are probably all reasons why you love this place and call it home. But it isn’t always easy to stay on top of. Forestland owners may need help managing their wildfire risk, forest pests and diseases, invasive species, rising insurance costs, and complex regulations.
While managing your forestland can seem daunting, the first steps are simple. This event is designed to help you feel confident about what you can do and feel supported where you need help.
Our morning session will take place 11am-1pm at the Guerneville Elementary School Multi-purpose Room. Join us to learn more about:
- Forest management techniques, including thinning, brush removal & prescribed burning
- Financial assistance available for your property
- How to form a FireWise community to get insurance discounts and other benefits
- The Guernewood Park, Rio Nido, and Mt. Jackson system of Shaded Fuel Breaks
You’ll hear from a range of speakers from organizations whose mission it is to support good forest management and firewise communities, including representatives from CAL FIRE, Sonoma Resource Conservation District, Fire Safe Sonoma, Sonoma Ecology Center and County of Sonoma. You’ll also hear from land managers like you who will share how they got support to get work done in their forested properties: Green Valley Farm + Mill and Odd Fellows Recreation Club.
Our afternoon session will take place 1:30-4pm at Armstrong Woods State Natural Reserve.
The afternoon session is optional. Transportation is provided from Guerneville School to Armstrong Woods. Space is limited. Registration is required to secure your spot. Please bring a lunch with you to enjoy before we leave the school.
During this field tour, Ryan Klausch, Environmental Scientist for California State Parks, will show how Armstrong Woods has recovered from the 2020 Walbridge Fire and the strategies they are using to steward this forested land, including plans to introduce prescribed fire. Ryan will relate the work State Parks is doing to activities all Russian River forestland owners can do to make their forest more resilient to future wildfire, better habitat for wildlife, and a place we can proudly pass down to future generations.
