New York City Youth Civics Initiative

Learn about the connection between the issues we care about and the political process. You only have to register for one day.

Consistent with our mission to promote student involvement in sustained forms of civic engagement, New York City Youth Civics Initiative (NYCYCI) and The New York City League of Women Voters present “Why Voting Matters, Make Your Voice Your Vote, Connecting Activism to the Ballot Box. A virtual event series highlighting the connections between the issues students care about, and political engagement. Day 1 (July 16th at 1 p.m.) will feature a webinar highlighting three youth led organizations (Student Learning Project, PBS Student Reporting Labs and Coalition Z). There will be a 1.5 hour break followed by advocacy workshops from the three organizations at 3:30 p.m.Day 2 (July 21st at 1p.m) will feature a panel discussion with amongst Manhattan Borough President Gale Brewer, Yvote student activist Karla Sterrett and LWVNYS Deputy Director Jennifer Wilson on how to best effect legislative and political change. Shortly after the panel, three youth-led advocacy organizations (Yvote, Youth Over Guns and Young Governors) will lead workshops on how to acquire the tools and skills your vote count and turn your ideas into action.NYCYCI’s Why Voting Matters event series will inform students about their important role in the political process and empower them with the skills, tools and resources they need to make their vote count, remain engaged, and effect lasting change.
