Water and Energy for Food Grand Challenge

Join us for 10 riveting sessions on climate-friendly innovations, financing, policies, technical assistance, and gender and BOP integration.

After six years of groundbreaking work, Securing Water for Food (SWFF) and Powering Agriculture (PAEGC) Grand Challenges concluded this spring. Our 10-part learning series features innovators sharing their experiences with both programs, lessons learned from the Technical Assistance Facility, and recommendations to improve future water, energy, and agriculture programming. Each session highlights a specific cross-cutting themes (e.g. SWFF’s experience with incorporating gender into technical assistance, how innovators developed base of the pyramid business models, environmental monitoring, or PAEGC’s experience in enabling environment improvement).SWFF promoted science and technology solutions that enabled the production of more food with less water and/or made more water available for food production, processing, and distribution. The program’s innovators helped more than seven million farmers grow nearly 7 million tons of food while reducing their water usage by 19 billion liters. SWFF innovators leveraged more than $25 million in external funds through 300 additional partnerships. The objective of Powering Agriculture was to support the development and deployment of clean energy innovations that increase agriculture productivity and stimulate low carbon economic growth in the agriculture sector of developing countries to help end extreme poverty and extreme hunger. PAEGC helped to develop 71 clean energy solutions, install 6,236 kW of renewable energy generation capacity and reach 234,100 beneficiaries (such as farmers, households and agribusinesses) and reduce 29,520 metric tons of Carbon Dioxide Equivalent (tCO2e) as a result of its innovators’ field activities. The series will also discuss how the new program, Water and Energy for Food (WE4F), will capitalize on SWFF’s and PAEGC’s learnings to ensure the best possible outcomes.
