Quantum computing is a type of computation that harnesses the collective properties of quantum states–, such as superposition, interference, and entanglement–, to perform calculations. The devices that perform these quantum computations are known as quantum computers.Join C2ST and Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory to learn about the Superconducting Quantum Materials and Systems Center (SQMS) and the researchers behind it! The SQMS center at Fermilab brings together an interdisciplinary team of more than 80 experts in superconducting technologies, condensed matter physics, materials science, atomic physics, theoretical particle physics, and key areas of quantum information science. Bianca Giaccone is an Associate Scientist in the Physics and Sensing area of SQMS, where she works on implementing searches for new particles using SRF cavities. She received her Bachelor's and Master's degree in Physics at the University of Milan (Italy). Akshay Murthy is a research associate at Fermilab working in the SQMS division. He works in the area of materials characterization and fabrication of superconducting qubits. This involves the use of electron microscopy and time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry to identify potential sources of quantum decoherence in these systems. He received his Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering from Northwestern University in 2020 and his BS in Materials Science and Engineering in 2015.Featured Speaker: Sam Posen, Ph.D. - Scientist and Deputy Division Head for the Applied Physics and Superconducting Technology Division

Sam Posen is a Scientist in Fermilab&#x27;s Applied Physics and Superconducting Technology Division, studying superconducting radiofrequency cavities and materials science. Sam performs applied research aimed at improving the performance of superconducting cavities for particle accelerators and quantum science, as well as basic research into the fundamental behavior of superconductors in high-frequency electromagnetic fields. He also contributes his expertise in superconducting cavities to scientific projects based on advanced particle accelerators. Dr. Posen obtained his Ph.D. in physics, performing research in Cornell University&#x27;s SRF group under advisor Matthias Liepe. His undergraduate degree is in Engineering Physics from Queen&#x27;s University in Kingston, Ontario, Canada. David van Zanten is an Associate Scientist at Fermilab working in the SQMS division. He works on the design and measurement of superconducting quantum devices in various architectures. The goal of this work is to create a hardware platform for fundamental quantum research and algorithms. David completed his MSc. Applied physics in Delft and received his Ph.D. in Condensed matter physics from Université Grenoble Alpes. Before joining the SQMS team, David worked as a postdoctoral researcher at the Niels Bohr institute in Copenhagen.This program is presented in partnership with:
